What I know for sure is that teacher burnout can be debilitating. You may be feeling dozens of different emotions. You probably feel regret, guilt, and fear. (Oh, you feel loads of fear.)

Some teachers second-guess their decision to become a teacher in the first place. Many teachers start their careers filled with high hopes, idealism, and a zest for making a difference in the lives of their students.

No one realizes that there may be evenings and weekends filled with planning lessons and grading papers. A common complaint is that teachers don't have the time they want for their own families.

The system has changed dramatically in the last couple of decades, and teachers are expected to do more and more with less and less.

The pressure can become unbearable.

At some point, you start to wonder if there is something else “out there” that you could be doing that would include less stress and more work-life balance.

But deciding to look for that something else “out there” feels confusing and complicated.

Deciding to stay with teaching as your profession or going in a different direction is a tough decision.

Are you one of those teachers who knew from the age of five that you wanted to teach? In that case, you now feel more than a little deflated.

There is no getting around this one fact, however.

Teaching isn't as much fun as it used to be.

When you realize you aren't enjoying teaching anymore, that's when teacher burnout creeps in.
