ON A PERSONAL NOTE

I was doing some shopping right after July 4 - my area was preparing  for the possible arrival of Hurricane Beryl.  Of course since the 4th has passed the school supplies are already starting to be loaded on the shelves!  I find this mildly annoying because it heralds the looming end of summer, but I've resigned myself to expecting it.   What I found jaw-dropping was the arrival of Halloween candy!  I had to blink a few times to make sure I was seeing what I thought I was seeing!  When I was teaching, I was usually excited to see the school supplies come out because that's when I started all the planning for what was coming.

Now I feel a complex mix of emotions when I see them - nostalgia, excitement, a little anxiety, and feelings of empathy and support for all my teacher friends.

Here comes another year, my friends.  Be ready.

Career Possibilities Outside of Teaching

I want to detail some of the careers out there that a teacher can transition to outside of the classroom.  I couldn't land on a top ten list, so here is a lucky thirteen!  And this is just the tip of an iceberg.  The possibilities really are endless.  Here is our Lucky Thirteen list with a short description

1. Corporate Training and Development: Your skills in designing and delivering engaging lessons translate perfectly into creating and conducting training programs for employees. This role leverages your teaching, planning, and creativity skills.

2. Human Resources: Teachers excel in communication, organization, and conflict resolution, all crucial in HR roles. You could work in recruitment, employee relations, or ensure a positive workplace environment.

3. Writing and Editing: Many teachers have strong writing skills, making writing and editing a natural fit. Opportunities include content creation, technical writing, editing for publications, or even authoring books based on your teaching experiences.

4. Project Management: Your experience in planning lessons, managing classrooms, and meeting deadlines is valuable in coordinating projects, managing teams, and achieving project goals. Consider certifications like CAPM or PMP to get started.

5. Sales and Marketing: Excellent communication, persuasion, and creativity make teachers well-suited for these roles. EdTech products, customer relations, and marketing campaigns are areas where teachers can excel.

6. Event Planning: If you love organizing and coordinating activities, this field is for you. Your planning skills, attention to detail, and ability to communicate with diverse groups will help you manage events, conferences, or corporate functions.

7. Public Relations: Manage communication between organizations or individuals and the public. This role includes media relations, crisis communication, and social media management, using your communication skills to maintain a positive image.

8. Customer Service Management: Overseeing customer service teams, improving satisfaction, and managing operations are key responsibilities. Your ability to handle diverse personalities and resolve issues is crucial here.

9. Real Estate: This field offers roles as agents, property managers, or in real estate development. Your organizational skills and ability to handle complex paperwork can lead to success.

10. Healthcare Administration: Manage healthcare facilities, work in patient services, or handle administrative roles. Your organizational skills and ability to work in high-pressure environments are key assets.

11. Non-Profit Sector: Roles in program management, fundraising, or advocacy benefit from your passion for making a difference and skills in organization and communication.

12. Technical Support and IT Services: Provide technical support, manage IT projects, or work in IT customer service. Problem-solving skills and patience are essential in these positions.

13. Entrepreneurship: Start your own business and follow your passion. Whether it’s opening a tutoring center, a coffee shop, or an online store, the possibilities are endless. The Small Business Administration can help you get started.

A RECIPE FOR FUN!

Our family had board game day recently, and we play this really fun game!

This game is a team-based fast action party game that has you describing as many words as possible in 90 seconds. The tricky bits are the Jalapeno Cards which add rules to your team. The hotter the jalapeno, the more difficult the rules. These rules will prevent you from saying 'Hot Words.' (a little like the old Taboo game worked, if you remember that game). If any member of another team hears you utter a hot word, they can ring the dinner bell to force you to drop the card you're working on and draw a new one.

The game is played over 4 'courses', every course you'll get a new jalapeno card which will add to the previous hot words your team already have. These are cumulative and will make each course trickier! Harder jalapeno cards score higher bonus points though, so striking the balance is key.

We played one round where by the last round, my team was prevented from using 1, 3, or 5 letter words!   It was wild!
