Changing careers is not something one takes on lightly, is it? In fact, it may be years in the making. I talked to one young man who said he knew six years ago that teaching wasn’t the career for him. But he didn’t do anything about it. I talked to someone just yesterday who repeated several times that she just didn’t see herself being able to continue teaching for another 15 years.
Now that we have gotten past the 4th of July, it’s time to start thinking about going back to school. Indeed, as I began to work on this post, the Vice President and others were on TV to talk about just this subject.
Some teachers may be facing layoffs and furloughs because of COVID-19. Many teachers haven’t received a contract yet. Those who have are noticing new language referencing the possibility of furloughs.
We are going to need more climate scientists and health care professionals, including researchers and lab assistants so that we can be ready for the next potential pandemic.
Job cuts in schools are on the horizon for lots of people, I fear. With businesses closed, states and localities starving for revenue, they aren’t going to be able to pay for as many teachers as they would like, I fear.
